The STEM Alliance & the Future of the Co-Op Summer Enrichment Program
For over eighteen months, The STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck has been participating in both informal and formal conversations about the future of the Mamaroneck Summer Co-Op Summer Enrichment Program (Co-Op). Based upon encouragement from the school administration and community stakeholders as well as at the approval of our STEM Alliance Board, the STEM Alliance has compiled a complete report of key elements of Co-Op’s history, current program and recommendations for the future of Co-Op. The scope of the work includes (but is not limited to):
- Meetings with providers running local Village and Town programs
- Data review of Town and Village Camp models (price, attendance, basic offerings, staff make-up)
- Site visits at other summer programs in our region (Rock the Boat, SoundWaters program for At-Risk Students, and Greenwich Summer School)
- Program review and cost assessment of a potential partnership model with the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle
- Stakeholder interviews with community members such as youth employees, administrators, educators, and past Co-Op participants
- Formation and leadership of a Co-Op Summer Enrichment Steering Committee with diverse representation of key stakeholders (see Appendix A in full report)
- Review of the history of the Co-Op Summer Program
- Review of numerous relevant research papers on Afterschool and Out-of-School Time Enrichment programs with a focus on cost, impact, assessment tools and quality indicators
- Financial modeling of proposed budget scenarios
It has been the Alliance's privilege to add leadership to a cooperative discussion about the importance of maintaining this program for our community while also leading it into the future with an eye toward creating a program that focuses on critical, integrated, hands-on learning in areas such as STEM, literacy and creativity — the skills that kids will need to be successful now and in the future.
